Stink Vine
Paederia foetida · Rubiaceae
A climbing vine with a sulfurous odor renowned in classical Ayurveda for curing joint stiffness and paralytic conditions.
Paederia foetida is a vigorous twining climber recognizable by the foul sulfurous odor released upon crushing any part of the plant. Despite its sharp smell, it is among the highest-ranking Rasayana herbs for Vata vyadhi (neurological and orthopedic disorders). The sulfur-containing glycosides transform upon cooking, yielding deep warming and strength-giving qualities.
Twining climber with opposite ovate to lanceolate leaves; small bell-shaped dirty-white or purple flowers with red centers; tiny polished yellowish spherical fruits.
