Sweet-Scented Oleander
Mammea suriga · Calophyllaceae
An aromatic evergreen tree bearing sweetly perfumed white-and-red blossoms used for wound healing, skin diseases, and fevers.
Mammea suriga (syn. Ochrocarpos longifolius) is a handsome, medium-to-large evergreen tree native to the Western Ghats. Its tight clusters of flower buds, blooming directly on old wood, release an intoxicating fragrance and are historically known in traditional treatises as Surangi. In Ayurvedic clinical practice, these flowers provide astringent, cooling, and antimicrobial relief in chronic skin sores and febrile distress.
Thick, dark-green, leathery oblong-lanceolate leaves; dense clusters of small, fragrant white flowers with prominent red staminal balls emerging from trunk/nodes; oval berries.
