Brasenia schreberi is a rooted freshwater aquatic plant with peltate floating leaves coated beneath with a thick clear gelatinous mucilage. The slender creeping rhizomes anchor into muddy lake bottoms, generating long petiolated leaves and small purplish flowers. In traditional water medicine (jala-oushadhis), its rhizome is valued for its soothing, demulcent, and astringent properties.
