Chickpea
Cicer arietinum · Fabaceae
Astringent-sweet legume classically used for strength, diabetes-prone constitutions and weight management.
Chickpea is an annual legume of ancient Indian and Mediterranean cultivation, described in Ayurvedic texts as Chanaka. Classical materia medica values it as heavy, astringent and cooling, kapha-provoking but vata-pacifying when properly prepared, and specifically noted in urinary disorders and obesity regimens.
Small bushy annual, 30-60 cm, with imparipinnate serrated leaflets, small violet-white papilionaceous flowers, and inflated pods usually containing 1-2 beaked, pea-like seeds (kabuli - cream; desi - brown).
